The science behind the method

The science is evolving.

Research suggests fascinating links between breathing, cold exposure, the nervous system, immune response and our experience of stress.

The Wim Hof Method has attracted scientific interest because it explores how breathing, cold exposure and mindset influence our physiological response to stress. At Ice Breath Mind, we respect both the potential of the practice and the limits of what science has established so far.

Some scientific highlights

Study 1

Influencing the immune response

Radboud University. Kox et al., PNAS, 2014. doi:10.1073/pnas.1322174111

Purpose
To test whether people trained in breathing, meditation and cold exposure could voluntarily influence their autonomic nervous system and innate immune response.
What they found
After only 10 days of training, participants produced more adrenaline, showed higher levels of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 and lower levels of several pro-inflammatory mediators, and experienced fewer flu-like symptoms after a bacterial endotoxin was administered than the untrained control group.

Trained participants could voluntarily influence physiological processes previously regarded as largely involuntary.

Study 2

“Brain over body”: how the brain responds to cold

Muzik, Reilly & Diwadkar, NeuroImage, 2018. doi:10.1016/j.neuroimage.2018.01.067

Purpose
Researchers used brain and body imaging to investigate how Wim Hof himself regulates his response to cold.
What they found
During the Wim Hof Method, brain regions associated with the regulation of pain and cold, internal focus and sustained attention became engaged. This was a case study of Wim Hof, so it does not show that everyone responds in the same way.

A fascinating glimpse into the connection between mind, brain and the experience of cold.

Study 3

Breath and cold compared with meditation

Fox, Biddell & King, Scientific Reports, 2025. doi:10.1038/s41598-025-29187-9

Purpose
To compare Wim Hof Method-style breathing and cold exposure with mindfulness meditation, in 404 healthy adults over 29 days.
What they found
The Wim Hof Method groups reported greater immediate improvements in energy, mental clarity and ability to handle stress after daily practice than the meditation group. Longer-term changes were more limited, and the physiological, sleep and cognitive results were nuanced.

Breath and cold showed promising effects on how people felt right after practising, particularly energy, clarity and perceived ability to handle stress.
